DZL member institution ITEM celebrates its 40th anniversary

News 2021-302 EN

The Fraunhofer Institute for Toxicology and Experimental Medicine ITEM enters its fifth decade of existence with a major new field of research - cardiovascular research and the development of RNA-based diagnostics and therapeutic approaches.

The link with lung and respiratory research, the field in which Fraunhofer ITEM in Hannover has already specialized for 40 years, has great potential. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary, the two institute directors of Fraunhofer ITEM, Prof. Norbert Krug and Prof. Thomas Thum, invited to a panel discussion on July 13. Together with Lower Saxony's Minister of Science Björn Thümler, Prof. Michael Manns, President of the Hannover Medical School (MHH), and Prof. Ulrike Köhl, Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology IZI in Leipzig, they discussed how the institute's previous focus on respiratory research and the future field of cardiovascular research come together, what this means for the city of Hannover and the state of Lower Saxony as a science location, and how people will benefit from the research.
