Grant-Writing Skills for Early Career PostDocs

Date of next workshop: three live sessions of 2.5 hrs each (15 -17:30 hrs) on Dec 4th, 5th and 6th

You can apply for the workshop any time by submitting the following documents via email to Dr. Birgit Teucher, DZL Academy Project Manager.

Content and Objectives

Grant reviewers say that many wonderful projects do not get funded because the idea was not communicated clearly enough. Excellent science is not enough for writing a successful research application. To get funded, you also need excellent grantsmanship. In this workshop, you will learn how to:

  • interpret correctly your application form and evaluation criteria: application forms suggested by the group will be discussed
  • use strong structure in state of the art, objectives, and methodological programme – the key scientific sections
  • provide clear, convincing answers to the key requirements of novelty, feasibility, methodological complexity, and project impact (added value)
  • write a statement on the future trajectory of your career and how this project will advance your research program
  • make the most of your academic record in the CV, using a 2-page CV as a guideline

Target group

What previous participants say:

"Being very unexperienced in writing grant proposals I now feel I understand what is asked from me to do so and I feel confident to try, as soon as the opportunity arises"

"Thank you giving us the opportunity to participate in this excellent workshop! this course should be a fixed feature for all academy fellows"

"The course was absolutely amazing. Julia is so full of knowledge, invaluable tips, tricks and insights. The structure of the course was very clear. It was absolutely essential to look at a grant not from the viewpoint of the applicant but from the reviewers point of view. The podcasts on the homepage are packed with information, which in itself is an entire course and will drastically change the way I write and communicate in grant proposals. The course has opened my eyes and will most definitely increase my chances to be funded. Julia is open for any questions, the atmosphere was very honest, relaxed and fruitful and I can only recommend anyone ever considering writing a grant to apply for this course as it will open your eyes to a whole new world of grant writing!"
