DZL Researchers at Hannover Medical School (MHH) have performed the first living donor lung transplant in Germany.
Surgeons at the MHH Department of Cardiothoracic, Transplantation and Vascular Surgery transplanted an 11 year old boy with a lung lobes donated by his mother and his father. The boy, who has cystic fibrosis, had waited in vain for a donor lung. Since no donor organ was forecast to be available in the foreseeable future, his parents opted for a live donation.
The MHH has been performing lung transplants since 1988. In the German Center for Lung Research (DZL), MHH Scientists (member of the DZL Partner site BREATH) are researching how treatment results can be improved following lung transplantation.
