DZL scientist Prof. Dr. med. Marcus A. Mall presented his latest research on cystic fibrosis during the plenary session of this year’s North American Cystic Fibrosis Conference (NACFC 2025), which took place from October 22 to 25, 2025, in Seattle.
The NACFC is organized by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF), a leading U.S. non-profit organization that supports research, clinical care, and patient advocacy in the field of cystic fibrosis. The conference is recognized worldwide as the premier event for cystic fibrosis, bringing together researchers, clinicians, and experts from around the globe each year to discuss the latest findings and innovative therapeutic approaches.
During the plenary session, attended by approximately 4,000 participants, Prof. Mall, together with Dr. Claire Keating from the Columbia University Irving Medical Center, presented the transformative impact of CFTR modulators as a form of precision medicine. The discussion covered both clinical experiences with existing modulators and perspectives on future therapies, including ion-based approaches that go beyond CFTR.
Prof. Mall is the Director of the Department of Pediatrics, specializing in Pulmonology, Immunology, and Intensive Care Medicine at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. He is recognized as one of the world’s leading experts in the research and treatment of cystic fibrosis. His work focuses on understanding disease mechanisms and developing innovative therapies for cystic fibrosis and other severe, chronic lung diseases. At the DZL, he serves as the scientific coordinator for the Disease Area Cystic Fibrosis & Bronchiectasis.
