The European Respiratory Society (ERS) and the European Lung Foundation (ELF) have published a joint statement highlighting the growing threats to science and scientists worldwide. The German Center for Lung Research (DZL) fully supports this clear call for independent, rigorous, and internationally connected research.
The statement warns of increasing dangers from disinformation, political pressure, and cuts to research funding, which could undermine decades of scientific progress. ERS and ELF emphasize the need to protect the independence of science, uphold scientific integrity and transparency, and strengthen international collaboration—as essential foundations for medical progress and public health.
“Independent, collaborative science is the backbone of public health. It must be protected from disinformation and political manipulation,” said Dr. Eva Polverino, ERS Director of Scientific Relations with the European Union. Dimitris Kontopidis, Chair of ELF, added: “Patients and the public deserve access to reliable, evidence-based information—not disinformation that puts lives at risk.”
The concerns raised by ERS and ELF resonate strongly within the DZL. At this year’s DZL Annual Meeting, Prof. Werner Seeger, DZL spokesperson, emphasized that science is more than a profession — it is a mindset that demands truth, responsibility, and solidarity. He called for a determined defense of the freedom and independence of research
ERS and ELF have been key partners of the DZL for many years. The European Respiratory Society (ERS) is Europe’s leading professional society for respiratory medicine. It brings together over 35,000 professionals from more than 160 countries to prevent, treat, and cure respiratory diseases through excellent research, education, and evidence-based health policy.
The European Lung Foundation (ELF) represents patients’ interests and connects them with medical and research professionals to improve diagnosis, treatment, and care. As a longstanding member of the DZL Scientific Advisory Board, Dr. Pippa Powell, ELF Director, ensures that patient perspectives are effectively represented in the DZL’s work.
By supporting the joint ERS and ELF statement, the DZL reaffirms its commitment to scientific freedom, transparency, and international collaboration are essential for medical progress and a healthier future for all.
