CPI once again designated as a Cluster of Excellence

News 2025-225 EN

The Cardio-Pulmonary Institute (CPI) is among the selected Clusters of Excellence in the current funding line of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and will receive funding for another seven years. Out of 98 applications, the CPI was successfully selected – a significant achievement for the participating institutions.

The CPI is a joint research center of Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU), Goethe University Frankfurt, and the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research. Its mission is to investigate heart and lung diseases with the goal of developing personalized therapies based on precise molecular mechanisms – in line with its guiding principle: “Precision Biology Drives Precision Medicine.”

The Cluster of Excellence is jointly led by Prof. Dr. Susanne Herold, a researcher at the German Center for Lung Research (DZL) and the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF) at JLU, and Prof. Dr. Stefanie Dimmeler, spokesperson of the German Center for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK). They are supported by Prof. Dr. Thomas Braun, a DZL and DZHK researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research.

With more than 200 researchers involved, the CPI pursues an integrative, interdisciplinary approach. Cutting-edge data analytics, clinical studies, and digital tools help ensure that research findings are swiftly translated into clinical practice. Early-career support, equal opportunities, and science communication are firmly embedded in the institute’s mission.

Following its initial funding period from 2006 to 2018 as the Cluster of Excellence “Cardio-Pulmonary System,” the CPI was successfully re-established in 2019. Its renewed selection highlights the internationally leading role of heart and lung research at the sites in Giessen, Frankfurt, and Bad Nauheim, while also strengthening collaboration between the participating research centers.
