125 Years of Thoraxklinik Heidelberg: A Success Story in Lung Medicine

News 2024-392 EN

The Thoraxklinik Heidelberg, a partner institution of the German Center for Lung Research (DZL) at the TLRC (Translational Lung Research Center) site, is celebrating its 125th anniversary. With over 45,000 patients treated annually and approximately 2,000 surgeries performed, the clinic has developed into one of the largest and most renowned lung clinics in Europe.

As on e of the largest lung clinics in Europe, the Thoraxklinik specializes in the diagnostics and treatment of lung diseases and thoracic conditions. Key focuses include the treatment of lung cancer, the care of chronic lung diseases such as COPD, and the support of patients undergoing weaning from mechanical ventilation. As an excellence center for thoracic surgery, the clinic is one of the leading institutions in Germany and operates the largest lung biobank in the country.

Prof. Dr. Felix Herth, Medical Director of the Thoraxklinik and DZL scientist, emphasizes the significant progress in research: “We are researching both the area of pathophysiology, which involves how diseases arise and affect the body, as well as how patients can be helped accordingly. Furthermore, we are developing medical technology implants and procedures in collaboration with many partners. Over the past 20 years, we have developed several procedures in medical technology and pharmacotherapy that are now considered state of the art worldwide and benefit many people. We are proud of this. Examples include endobronchial ultrasound and implants that influence and direct airflow to areas of the lung where healthy lung tissue is still present, allowing the patient to breathe better.”

A pivotal moment in the clinic's history was its integration into the Heidelberg University Hospital in 2011. Prof. Herth explains, “This transition from a non-university to a university institution has been very successful for us, without losing our own identity. This is only possible with a great team dedicated to the patients and the continuous development of therapeutic procedures.”

The anniversary celebration on September 14 featured exciting lectures, tours, and various program highlights, allowing guests to experience the history and future of the clinic up close.
