DZL Director Oliver Eickelberg receives Gay-Lussac-Humboldt-Award 2013
Neuherberg, Jan 23rd, 2014. Prof Dr Oliver Eickelberg, Director of the DZL CPC-M site, Founding Director of the Comprehensive Pneumology Center, Director of the Institute for Lung Biology and Disease at the Helmholtz Zentrum München and Department Chair for Experimental Pneumology at the University Hospital of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, was honored with the Gay-Lussac-Humboldt-Award 2013. Since 1983 the Gay-Lussac-Humboldt-Award has been awarded to excellent scientists from Germany and France who have contributed significantly to French-German scientific cooperation. The prize is awarded in cooperation with the Alexander-von-Humboldt Foundation. The presentation of the award, which includes 60.000 Euro, will take place on April 1st, 2014, at the Institute de France in Paris.
Prof Dr Eickelberg receives the award for his role in the Helmholtz-INSERM (Institute national de la santé et de la recherce médicale)-Alliance for the cure of chronic lung disease. At the initiative of the ministries of research in both France and Germany and under the direction of Prof Dr Eickelberg, the Helmholtz-INSERM alliance was founded to strengthen French-German cooperation in the research area of Pneumology. In addition to joint research projects, the program is focused on the development of a Postdoctoral program and the creation of a French-German lung school. The French-German Lung School is an integral part of the DZL.
The main focus of the translational research of Prof Dr Eickelberg is on cellular signaling pathways that play an important role in the development of chronic lung diseases. The award money will be used to fund joint projects with colleagues Marina Pretolani, Michael Aubier and Marc Humbert of INSERM on “Functional characterization of cellular phenotypes in chronic lung diseases”.
