A recent study published in the scientific journal CHEST, led by DZL scientists from the Institute for Lung Health (ILH) in Gießen, investigated the effectiveness of various risk models for predicting different forms of Pulmonary Hypertension (PH). This comprehensive analysis, based on data from the global Pulmonary Vascular Research Institute (PVRI) GoDeep Meta-Registry, shows that risk assessments originally developed for Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH) also possess high predictive power for other PH groups (2 to 4).
The study analyzed data from over 8,500 patients enrolled at 15 international research centers worldwide. It was found that all examined risk models—including REVEAL Lite 2, REVEAL 2.0, and ESC/ERS 2022—provided reliable predictions for the entire PH population as well as for each individual PH group. Notably, the REVEAL score family, as continuous predictive models, demonstrated the highest statistical predictive power. The results of this study underscore the importance of careful risk assessment for treatment planning in PH patients. This is especially crucial as the various PH groups, caused by different underlying conditions such as heart or lung diseases, often require individualized treatment. These findings represent a significant step towards more precise and patient-specific therapy planning for Pulmonary Hypertension, particularly in areas that have been less explored. The results will help improve the survival chances of PH patients by assisting doctors in making informed treatment decisions. The study also highlights the importance of large, international databases like the PVRI GoDeep Meta-Registry, which enable the global exploration of rare diseases like PH and set new standards for clinical practice.
