On October 30, 2025, the new special exhibition “Mucus – Secrets of an Underestimated Body Fluid” was officially opened at the Berlin Medical History Museum. Among the opening speakers was Prof. Dr. Marcus Mall, Director of the Clinic for Pediatrics with a focus on Pulmonology, Immunology, and Intensive Care Medicine at Charité Berlin, and scientific coordinator of the DZL disease area Cystic Fibrosis & Bronchiectasis.
In his speech, Prof. Mall emphasized the important role of mucus in the defense functions of healthy airways and in the development of chronic lung diseases. Mucus protects the mucous membranes, keeps them moist, and helps to defend against pathogens and harmful substances. In cystic fibrosis and other chronic lung diseases, mucus is altered, and this protective function is impaired. By studying the mechanisms that lead to these mucus dysfunctions, researchers can gain insights into the development of diseases in mucus-producing organs and develop new therapies.
The exhibition invites visitors to rediscover mucus as a vital component of the human body – in biology, medicine, and cultural history. Visitors can learn about current research and understand why mucus is essential for our health.
The exhibition can be explored at the Berlin Medical History Museum at Charité until September 6, 2026.
