DZL scientist receives the Johannes Wenner Research Award 2024

News  EN

Dr. Ruth Grychtol, a specialist in pediatric and adolescent medicine at the Clinic for Pediatric Pneumology, Allergology, and Neonatology at the Hannover Medical School, Hannover site BREATH at the German Center for Lung Research (DZL), has been awarded the research prize, endowed with 15,000 euros, for her pioneering work on personalized asthma therapy for children.

Allergic asthma is the most common chronic disease in childhood in Western industrialized countries. For some of those affected, symptoms subside by adulthood, while others suffer from the condition throughout their lives. Why asthma disappears in some children and persists in others remains unknown. Dr. Ruth Grychtol now aims to discover the impact of metabolic processes in immune cells on the course of the disease. Her research is based on data from previous work in the All Age Asthma Cohort (ALLIANCE), a cohort of children and adults with asthma, established and funded within the framework of the DZL. The findings from the study are expected to contribute to improving asthma prevention and tailoring therapy more specifically to children and adolescents with asthma. For this groundbreaking research project, Dr. Ruth Grychtol is awarded the Johannes Wenner Research Award by the German Lung Foundation (DLS) and the Society for Pediatric Pulmonology (GPP).
