DZL scientist awarded €116,600 grant for COPD research

News 2025-041 EN

Dr. Cheng-Yu Wu, a DZL scientist at the Justus Liebig University Giessen (DZL site UGMLC), has been awarded a grant of €116,600 by the Von Behring-Röntgen-Stiftung. His research focuses on one of the most common and severe lung diseases worldwide: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

COPD is not only a leading cause of illness and death but also a significant socioeconomic burden. Major triggers of the disease include air pollution and smoking. A key feature of COPD is a strong inflammatory response in the lungs, exacerbated by increased oxidative stress. This occurs because the body's protective mechanisms, which normally neutralize harmful substances, no longer function properly in COPD patients.

In his project, Dr. Wu investigates how these weakened antioxidant defenses contribute to inflammation and disease progression. He combines innovative approaches from basic research with preclinical models and clinical data. His goal is to better understand the complex relationship between oxidative stress and inflammatory processes. These insights aim to form the foundation for developing new therapeutic strategies that not only alleviate symptoms but also address the individual needs of patients.

The Von Behring-Röntgen-Stiftung regularly supports innovative medical research projects at the universities of Giessen and Marburg. In the current funding round, a total of ten projects were awarded, with a total of €1.6 million in grants. The official award ceremony took place on January 15, 2025, at the Landgrafenschloss in Marburg.
