The new annual report of the German Center for Lung Research (DZL) has been published. It provides a comprehensive overview of the scientific highlights, structural developments, and strategic directions of the past year – demonstrating how DZL continues to align its research toward clinical application and patient benefit.
With the start of its fourth funding period (DZL 4.0, 2024–2027), the center has further strengthened collaboration within its network. New disease-spanning working groups foster exchange between research areas and create synergies – for example between COPD and Asthma & Allergies. The areas of Cystic Fibrosis & Bronchiectasis as well as Regeneration & Organ Replacement have also been expanded and refocused.
The report also highlights scientific progress that exemplifies the strength of DZL: from new insights into asthma prevention and groundbreaking therapy successes in cystic fibrosis to single-cell mapping of the human lung and the development of a drug for pulmonary hypertension.
These examples illustrate how closely basic research, translational studies, and clinical application are interconnected at DZL – and how crucial cross-site collaboration is for advancing medical progress.
