DZL researchers gather in Heidelberg for the 3rd Annual DZL Internal Meeting

The 3rd Annual DZL Internal Meeting took place in Heidelberg at the historic Kongresshaus Stadthalle on January 21 and 22, 2014.  With over 400 registered participants, DZL scientists and clinicians from all over Germany came together to discuss the latest findings in lung research from the DZL.  Seven members of the DZL Scientific Advisory Board also participated in the meeting and were on hand to give feedback, advice, and help judge the 2nd Annual DZL Poster Contest.  This year poster prizes were awarded to the best poster from the Platforms as well as to each Disease Area.  Winners were selected from a field of close to 200 posters.  This year’s poster award winners are: 

  • Asthma and Allergy – Sabine Bartel, CPC-M, "MicroRNA-based identification of decreased CREB1 and SEC14L3 in experimental and human paediatric asthma"
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Korbinian Ballweg, CPC-M, "Cigarette smoke affects mitochondrial quality control by the ubiquitin proteasome system"
  • Cystic Fibrosis, Ute Oltmanns, TLRC, "Imaging of the nasal mucosa in patients with cystic fibrosis using optical coherence tomography"
  • Pneumonia and Acute Lung Injury, Rory Morty, UGMLC, "Transforming growth factor (TGF)-b directs trafficking of the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC)"
  • Diffuse Parenchymal Lung Disease, Herbert Schiller, CPC-M, "Quantitative proteomic profiling of extracellular matrix composition and protein secretion reveals novel modulators of pulmonary fibrosis"
  • Pulmonary Hypertension – prize shared by Prakash Chelladurai, UGMLC, "Deregulation of class I HDAC isoforms in human pulmonary arterial hypertension" and Rebecca Schmidt, TLRC, "Identification of a new intronic BMPR2-mutation and early diagnosis of heritable pulmonary arterial hypertension in a large family with mean clinical follow-up of 12 years"
  • End-stage Lung Disease – Saskia Ulrich, BREATH, "Ex-vivo derived respiratory epithelial cells generated from human pluripotent stem cells – new therapeutic approach for (genetic) lung diseases"
  • Lung Cancer – Anja Schmall, UGMLC, "The bidirectional crosstalk between macrophages and cancer cells induce CX3CR1 and CCR2 chemokines: fundamental for lung cancer growth and metastasis"
  • Platforms – Jens Hansen, TLRC, "Quantitative dual-energy computed tomography imaging: Evaluation of system performance regarding iodine quantification accuracy"
