Design and Implementation of a FHIR-Based Data Infrastructure from Hospital Information Systems to the German Emergency Department Data Admission Registry AKTIN

In the course of this research, we discerned the potential for the secondary utilization of medical data within the context of the German national emergency department data registry AKTIN. We identified all obligatory data to participate with AKTIN and analyzed our hospital information system to extract the relevant information into the interoperability standard HL7 FHIR. In a second step we transformed the information into the specific data format HL7 CDA required by AKTIN. We were able to integrate all obligatory data elements into the AKTIN registry infrastructure and validate the data format. Additional research is required to evaluate the data quality of this approach in comparison to the conventional emergency department documentation, which is completed by the attending physician.
