This project will train scientists across the German Center for Lung Research (DZL) on standardized workflows for microbial samples from the airways. The scientists involved will develop and test standardized workflows on airway samples obtained from pre-school children and infants from three diseases: asthma, cystic fibrosis and bronchopulmonary dysplasia, the lung disease of infants born pre-term. These research projects will identify components of the microbiome, the community of microbes from the airways, which act favorably or unfavorably on the development and progression of chronic lung diseases, which start in early childhood. The scientific questions asked in this project will improve our understanding of the interaction within the microbiome and its impact on respiratory health.
