What does it mean to grow up with a chronic disease? And how can people with asthma lead a largely normal life? These were some of the questions explored by secondary school students as part of the School Cinema Weeks. At three locations in Germany \u2013 in Winsen\/Luhe, Garbsen near Hanover and Germering near Munich \u2013 they watched the youth film Amelie Rennt<\/em> by Tobias Wiemann and then discussed the film with experts from the German Center for Lung Research (DZL).<\/p>\n

The screenings are part of the School Cinema Weeks programme within the framework of the 2026 Year of Science, \u201cMedicine of the Future\u201d, in which the DZL is participating. Following the screenings, study physicians from the DZL Asthma Registry ALLIANCE answered the students\u2019 questions and provided insights into the development, diagnosis and treatment of asthma.<\/p>\n

Amelie\u2019s story: Living with asthma<\/h5>\n

The film follows 13-year-old Amelie. Alongside the typical challenges of adolescence and family conflicts, she has to cope with asthma. After suffering a severe asthma attack, she is sent to a specialised clinic in South Tyrol for several months. There, she begins to confront her condition more closely \u2013 while also experiencing adventure, friendship and first romantic feelings.<\/p>\n

The film also highlights the emotional and social challenges that can come with living with a chronic disease. At the same time, it conveys the message that asthma does not necessarily mean giving up an active and independent life.<\/p>\n

What happens in asthma?<\/h5>\n

In the discussion following the screening, DZL experts explained what happens in the airways during asthma, how the disease is diagnosed and what treatment options are available. The students learned, among other things, that asthma attacks can be triggered or aggravated by a range of factors, including physical exertion, stress and infections.<\/p>\n

The experts also explained how the lungs function: oxygen enters the bloodstream through the lungs, while carbon dioxide is removed from the body. Good asthma control and the correct use of prescribed medication can help prevent symptoms and asthma attacks, allowing many people with asthma to lead largely normal lives.<\/p>\n

Another important point is the role of the people around those affected. Family members, friends and teachers should know how to support people with asthma and how to respond appropriately in an emergency.<\/p>\n

From the cinema back to the classroom<\/h5>\n

Back at school, the students were able to explore the topic further using educational materials provided by Vision Kino. The School Cinema Weeks combine film education with current social and scientific topics, giving young people the opportunity to approach these issues from a different perspective and discuss them together.<\/p>\n

The School Cinema Weeks are a nationwide film education programme in Germany. The films can be integrated into different school subjects and thematic areas and followed up using educational materials. Some screenings are accompanied on site by speakers or filmmakers.<\/p>\n

Through its participation in the School Cinema Weeks, the DZL brings the topic of lung health directly into conversation with young people, providing an accessible way to engage with questions surrounding asthma and living with a chronic disease.<\/p>\n
